Search Engine Optimization Link popularity
The link popularity component measures the number of links between web pages on the Internet. There are two kinds of links to focus on: inbound links (links to your web site) and outbound links (links from your web site). You can look at inbound links as a form of voting. If site A has a link to site B, A is voting for B. The more votes B gets from other sites, the more link-popularity B gains. A vote from a site with high link-popularity itself, will have more impact. Just like in the real world, a recommendation from another popular and trusted firm makes your business more popular as well.
Each web site that votes is a delegate with a number of voters behind them - the web sites that link to their web site. The more voters they have behind them, the more weight their vote carries to other sites. Therefore, websites that have link popularity themselves have more link popularity to pass on to your site. Some search engines "understand" the theme of related web pages. Sites with inbound links from thematically related web sites might get a better scoring from these search engines.
Some search engines that don’t understand the theme of your site will give you a score on behalf of a link of unrelated themes. For example a site about motor engines will get a push from an inbound link from a site about search engines. If the search engine knows that motor engines are totally different from search engines, the link will not count as heavily.
Outbound links work the other way around and are similar to references in a scientific report. If you have references to the right authorities in your profession, it shows that you know what you are talking about. You acknowledge the "Masters" and thereby put yourself in a category above sites that don't.
Tip: get authority links
Not all links count the same towards link popularity! Links from recognized authorities in your industry count more towards link popularity than links from a small, private web site on a free host. Moreover, a vote made by an authority that just gives votes to just 10 sites counts more than the vote of an authority voting for 10.000 sites. When votes are divided between more sites, then each vote loses importance.
Do not use free submission software or services to submit thousands of free directories and search engines just to gain more inbound links. Links from most of these places won't do you any good. Beware of submissions to FFA (Free For All) sites. They give you nothing but spam!
Do not participate in organized exchanging of unrelated links between web sites (link farming), to boost your link-popularity factor. Most search engines consider link farming to be spam. Instead, focus on getting inbound links from relevant, major players in your field; they are the only ones that really count.

Internal link popularity
In addition to inbound and outbound links, Link structure on your own web site has an important role in determining the value of each of your web pages Link Popularity. The pages throughout your web site that you most often link to will get the most internal link-popularity. If one of your pages has 100 internal pages pointing to it and another only has 10, the first web page is more likely to be more valuable to users as there are more pages "voting" for that page.
Tip: use intarnal navigation to raise linkpopularity
Many web sites have a navigation bar of some kind that points to the five to eight most important sections of the web site. These navigation bars appear on all web pages of the web site and therefore boost internal link-popularity in those sections. Make sure to include links to the web pages you most want to rank well in your cross-site navigation bar and make sure that the pages the navigation bar links to have good targeted content. The pages you link to in the navigation bar will be easier to achieve good Ranking in Search engines.
